A Road Trip Story - Part 2. Niagara Falls

In case you have not read the first part, this is a continuation of the Road Trip Story - Part 1 post.

4 days in the Finger Lakes region, 4 waterfall hikes, 3 nights camping in 3 NYS Parks.  Where to next?  I set my next destination to Niagara Falls, a natural wonder I believe is worthy to be designated as a National Park, if the 'right' actions were taken in the early days. It is a very popular tourist destination for people here and abroad.

No lodging accommodations in place but I was not too concerned.  The Western New York Welcome Center is less than 10 miles away from the Niagara Falls State Park.  This is a good candidate for a quick overnight stay if needed.

An 'all-in-days-work' approach on how the trip to Niagara Falls went.

Day 1

  • Stopped and checked the Western New York Welcome Center before going to Niagara Falls State Park.  The welcome center is already an attraction to see.  It contains lots of information about how to explore and enjoy New York state.

Tip.  Wherever you see the sign I 💗NY, stop and check out the place.  You might find something interesting.
  • Enjoyed Niagara Falls State Park like a tourist for a day.  I parked in Goat Island and explored the whole park.

  • Drove the Niagara Scenic Pkwy all the way to Old Fort Niagara, checking the gorge and rim trails in Schoellkopf Power Station, Whirlpool State Park, Devil's Hole State Park.  No real hiking yet, just short walks to overlooks.

  •  Day 1 ending in Four Mile Creek State Park, where I was able to get a walk-in campsite.  I just walked in and asked if there's any site available for a night.

Day 2

  • Hiked the Niagara Gorge Trails.  Here is a separate post covering the different gorge trails in Niagara Falls - Niagara Falls Gorge Trails.

  • Crossed the border and went to Canada by foot.  This is already an adventure to me!  And yes, views of the falls from the Canadian side are better.  But the American side has the raging and roaring sounds of the falls.

  • Enjoyed fireworks back in Goat Island.  I went back to US / Goat Island before 10PM and had a glimpse of tonight's fireworks before the park closed.

  • Day 2 ending in an overnight stay in the Welcome Center.  I drove back to the welcome center, tired, and slept in my Outback.
The day after, planning where to go next.

Day 3

  • Drove to Canada and had lunch at Niagara-on-the-Lake.

  • Back to US, and the scenic Great Lakes Seaway Trail road trip continued.
Following the Great Lakes Seaway Trail

Epilogue.

This was an impromptu road trip following the Great Lakes Seaway Trail, hugging the Lake Ontario shoreline, detouring for beaches and lighthouses, enjoying unexpected wonders on the road, and exploring every NYS State Park along the way for overnight camping options.  Follow the journey in this next post.
